Environmental Impact of AI in VetRec

Learn how VetRec approaches energy usage and environmental responsibility when using AI to generate medical records.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

VetRec helps veterinary teams spend less time typing and more time caring for patients. By generating structured medical records from recorded consultations, clinicians typically move from writing full notes to simply reviewing and editing them.
Studies measuring the energy use of modern AI models suggest that a typical request consumes only fractions of a watt-hour of electricity, and even larger requests use just a few watt-hours β€” comparable to running a laptop for a few minutes.
Because VetRec reduces the amount of time staff spend actively typing documentation, the total electricity used per consult is often similar to or lower than traditional documentation workflows.
We also design VetRec to be efficient by:

  • Using optimized AI models

  • Limiting unnecessary computation

  • Structuring prompts to minimize processing time

As AI infrastructure continues to become more efficient, we expect the environmental footprint of services like VetRec to continue decreasing.
