Care Plans are client-friendly take-home guides you can share after an appointment. They give pet parents a clear, practical summary of what to do at home, including medications, home care, restrictions, follow-up, and when to call the clinic.
What is a Care Plan?
A Care Plan is a simple version of the visit instructions written for pet parents. It is organized around the questions clients usually have once they leave the clinic:
What medications do I give, and how often?
What activity or diet restrictions should I follow?
What should I watch for at home?
When should I call the clinic or seek urgent care?
What follow-up steps are needed?
Care Plans are designed for pet parents. Review them before sharing, just like you would review any other client communication
What Care Plans include
Each Care Plan starts with a short visit summary, then includes the most relevant sections for that pet's visit. Depending on the appointment, a Care Plan may include:
Medications
Activity restrictions
Home care instructions
Monitoring guidance
Recovery timeline
Nutrition or feeding instructions
Vaccine schedule
Follow-up steps
When to call the clinic or go to urgent care
Care Plans are meant to be easy to scan. They focus on the information pet parents need most, instead of overwhelming them with every detail from the appointment.
How to generate Care Plans
Care Plans are generated automatically when you generate a discharge for the patient. Once generated, they can be found by navigating to the patient discharge and selecting the Care Plan tab.
Share a Care Plan
You can share a Care Plan in several ways, depending on your workflow.
Copy the Care Plan
Use the copy button to copy the Care Plan as plain text. This is helpful when you want to paste it into an email, practice management system, chat message, or other client communication tool.
Email the Care Plan
If email is enabled for your account, use the email button to send the Care Plan directly to the client. The Care Plan can be included as part of the email message or attached with other client-facing documents.
Download a PDF
Use the PDF button to download a branded Care Plan. This is helpful when you want to print a copy, attach it outside VetRec, or save it for your records.
Customize Care Plan branding
Care Plan PDFs can include clinic branding so the document feels familiar to clients. From the Care Plan view, select Care Plan branding to adjust:
Logo option
Clinic name
Clinic phone number
Accent color
Changes are saved for your account and update the Care Plan preview.
