VetRec connects to Shepherd right through the VetRec Chrome Extension β the same simple, side-by-side setup you may already use with other practice management systems.
β
Before you export for the first time, you'll do a quick one-time setup that tells VetRec where each part of your note should land in Shepherd's SOAP record. Once it's mapped, you're done β every future visit exports automatically.
β
What you'll need
The VetRec Chrome Extension installed from the Google Chrome Web Store
A Shepherd account you can log into in Chrome
A VetRec template you'd like to use for your notes
How the mapping works
Shepherd organizes records into the familiar SOAP layout. During setup, you simply tell VetRec which section of your note should fill each Shepherd field. You can map as many or as few fields as you like β anything you leave blank simply won't be exported.
VetRec can export into these areas of Shepherd:
Subjective (S) β Initial Complaint, Current Medications & Supplements, History
Objective (O) β Vitals and Physical Exam
Assessment (A) β Assessment, Laboratory, Imaging, and Documents notes
Plan (P) β Recommendation and Notes
Addendum β Addendum notes
Discharge β Discharge instructions
Two ways to set it up
You can configure the mapping right from the extension while you're working, or ahead of time on the VetRec web app. Either way, the settings are saved to your template.
Option 1: Set it up from the extension
Open a note in the VetRec extension with Shepherd displayed side-by-side in the same browser window.
If the template still needs setup, VetRec will let you know.
Open the Actions menu and choose Configure Shepherd integration.
For each Shepherd field, pick the VetRec section that should fill it. Leave anything you don't want to export set to Do not export.
Save your settings.
You can reopen this anytime from Actions > Configure Shepherd integration.
Option 2: Set it up on the web app
Go to the Templates section of the VetRec web app.
Open an existing template, or create a new one.
Go to Settings > Integrations.
Choose Shepherd from the list of practice management systems.
Match each Shepherd field to the VetRec section that should fill it.
Save your configuration β and, if you'd like, set it as your default.
A couple of Shepherd-specific tips
Vitals
To send vitals into Shepherd's vitals fields, choose the VetRec section whose entry names exactly match Shepherd's vital fields β for example: Weight, Temp, Pulse, Respiratory Rate, Mucous Membrane Color, Capillary Refill Time, Mucous Membrane Hydration, Attitude, and Mentation. When the names line up, VetRec drops each value into the right box for you.
Physical Exam
The Physical Exam uses Shepherd's exam templates, so there are two small extras:
Choose the VetRec section that holds your overall Physical Exam note.
Enter the exact name of the Shepherd Physical Exam template you use (for example, Standard Exam Template With Normals).
This lets VetRec match your findings to the correct boxes in that exam template.
That's it! Once your mapping is saved, you're ready to start exporting.
