Adding Snippets to Your Templates

Generate notes with your snippets

Updated this week

Snippets let you save reusable text (e.g., discharge language, protocols) and automatically insert the right pieces into AI-generated notes.

If you or your team haven't added any Snippets yet, you can add them by following this guide.

Open Snippet settings for a field

In Template Builder, create a new section or entry field, then:

  1. Select either a paragraph or a list type (only these types can be improved with snippets).

  2. Click the wrench icon and choose Snippets.

Tip: Set clear Instructions for the field (e.g., ā€œMedications prescribed during the consultationā€). The model uses the field’s generated content from your instructions to find relevant snippets.

How and where to insert snippets

  1. In the Snippet panel, set How to insert snippets (screenshot label 1):

  • Add snippet to text – Appends matched snippets below the generated text.
Safest default; keeps what the AI wrote and adds your standardized language.

  • Rewrite text with snippet – Uses the best-match snippet to rewrite the generated text (preserves meaning, standardizes wording).

  • Replace with snippets – Clears the field and inserts only matched snippets.
Use when you want the field to come exclusively from your snippet library.

2. Under Where to look for snippets (screenshot label 2), pick one or more folders (e.g., Medications, Take-Home Handouts).

  • This limits matching to the folders you select.

  • You can select multiple folders (the system searches across them).

Best-practice setup

  • Write instruction text that mirrors what you want matched.
Example for the Medications field: ā€œList prescribed medications during the consultation.ā€
Example: ā€œEar Infection: Medications – daily cleaner + drops after cleaning.ā€

  • Use ā€œReplace with snippetsā€ for sections that should be purely standardized.
Use Add or Rewrite when you still want AI to draft and snippets to enhance it.

  • Avoid empties: If you choose Replace, consider adding a simple default in the field (e.g., ā€œNo medications prescribed.ā€) in case no snippet matches.

Troubleshooting

  • ā€œNothing insertedā€

    • Check that you selected the correct folders/tags.

    • Loosen the behavior from Replace to Add to confirm matches.

    • Ensure the field’s Instructions and content contain the concepts your snippets cover.

  • ā€œWrong snippet insertedā€

    • Tighten the folders (remove unrelated libraries).

    • Improve snippet descriptions and names for clearer matching.

  • ā€œDuplicates in a listā€

    • Use Standardize a list with snippets to map and dedupe.
